Later this year, Sega will release Sonic The Hedgehog coloring books for adults in partnership with Insight Editions. Over the past 30 years, Sonic has built a strong fanbase of young and old players – and has appeared on all sorts of weird merchandise like LEGO sets, comics, and even Sonic The Hedgehog energy drinks. There are two interactive adventures planned for Sonic in 2022: Sonic Origins, a retro collection of titles from the Blue Blur’s 90s side-scrolling heyday, and Sonic Frontiers, a brand-new 3D platformer in which Sega’s favorite hypersonic hedgehog races through ancient civilization ruins written by Ian Flynn, longtime Sonic The Hedgehog comic scribe.
Publisher Insight Editions has a long history of publishing licensed books based on video game properties, from official art books on Borderlands 3 to children’s adaptations of Mature-rated games like God Of War (2018). As a result of partnering with 343 Industries on an official Halo cookbook, the publisher recently raised eyebrows, much to the dismay of players who wished to see an update to Halo: Infinite. As a result, Insight Editions gives gamers something they didn’t anticipate but which seems to make the most sense in retrospect: a Sonic The Hedgehog coloring book for adults.
Insight Editions has announced Sonic the Hedgehog: The Official Adult Coloring Book, now available to pre-order on Amazon. On October 25, this officially licensed book will be released, and it features 64 monochrome pages featuring Sonic and his supporting cast that adult fans can color in however they like. It was a surprise to some Sonic The Hedgehog fans to find the title of this new Sonic coloring book titled “adult,” but others pointed out that this means that the pictures contained in the book are too complex for younger audiences and that there is no NSFW material in the book.
