How to Find Adult Coloring Books That Aren’t AI-Generated

If you want an adult coloring book made by a documented human illustrator, start with evidence about the creator and publishing process—not a visual guess. Odd anatomy, inconsistent line weight or repeated motifs can be reasons to investigate, but none of them proves that generative AI was used.

The short answer

1. Find a named illustrator, not only a storefront brand.
2. Look for an official portfolio, publisher biography or process description that predates the book.
3. Check the publisher’s catalog, ISBN record and interior samples.
4. Ask the creator or publisher a neutral, specific process question when the evidence is incomplete.
5. Describe only what the evidence supports. Do not turn warning signs into accusations.

What counts as useful evidence?

Strong evidence

• A publisher page names the illustrator and links a biography or body of work.
• The artist shows sketches, line-art stages, source files, studio photographs or a consistent work-in-progress history.
• An interview, colophon or publisher statement explains the illustration process.
• The title has stable bibliographic details such as publisher, date and ISBN that match across authoritative records.

Supporting evidence

• A long-running portfolio with related work and consistent attribution.
• Interior previews that match the named artist’s documented style.
• Library, bookseller or rights-catalog records that identify the illustrator.

Not proof by itself

• Extra fingers, strange objects, broken symmetry or inconsistent detail.
• A large number of books published in a short period.
• A generic pen name, sparse biography or low price.
• The absence of a public AI disclosure.

These may justify a closer look, but traditional drawing, stock assets, photo tracing, poor editing, outsourced illustration and file-conversion problems can produce some of the same results.

Why marketplace disclosure does not settle the question

Amazon KDP requires publishers to disclose AI-generated text, images or translations to KDP and distinguishes AI-generated content from AI-assisted editing. That policy does not create a complete public consumer database. Therefore, a product page with no public AI label is not proof of a human-only process.

A fair verification workflow

1. Record the exact edition. Note title, publisher, publication date and ISBN.
2. Identify every credited creator. Look at the title page, copyright page and official catalog—not only the retail description.
3. Follow the attribution. Check the illustrator’s official site, reputable interviews and dated process posts.
4. Compare timelines. A documented body of work before the book is stronger than a new biography created only for the listing.
5. Contact the source. Ask: “Who illustrated this edition, and were generative image tools used to create the final line art?”
6. Publish a calibrated conclusion. Use “documented human illustrator,” “publisher states…,” or “process not publicly documented.” Avoid “verified non-AI” unless the scope and evidence are explicit and current.

Copyright is a separate question

The U.S. Copyright Office explains that copyrightability involving generative AI depends on human authorship and control and is assessed case by case. A copyright notice alone does not tell a shopper exactly how an image was made.
